Marking 41 years since the launch of the first G-Shock, Casio has recently unveiled the G-Shock DW-5000R, a near-identical recreation of the original 1983 DW-5000C. From the strap's dimple positioning to the rugged aesthetic, this latest model captures the nostalgic essence of the original while introducing subtle enhancements for modern wearers. The G-Shock line began with a vision from Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe, who sought to create a damage-resistant timepiece after a personal mishap left his mechanical watch shattered.
The result was the G-Shock, built on the principle of "triple 10" resistance: a 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance, and the ability to survive a 10-metre drop. The DW-5000C's ruggedness and utilitarian charm turned it into an enduring icon, beloved in streetwear culture and beyond. Preserving the original's spirit According to Casio, the DW-5000R is a "higher level of reproduction" compared to previous limited-edition reissues.
While the design stays true to its predecessor, there are a few updates: Case size: Slightly increased to 42.3mm from 41.6mm.
Button design: Shorter than the original. Water resistance: Now reads "20 BAR" instead of "200M." Modern enhancements Casio has introduced some updates, including a biomass plastic bezel and band to reduce environmental impact.
It also features a new LED backlight. Core functions like the stopwatch, multi-functional alarm, and calendar remain intact, with the stainless steel case staying true to its durable roots. The Casio G-Shock DW-5000R will launch in Japan on 13 December, priced at ¥33,000 (approximately BDT 26,285).
