Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has provided an insight into his decision to introduce Ansu Fati in a new-look role in the club’s latest outing. Wide-man Ansu, of course, was back in action on Tuesday night. In just his 2nd outing of what has been an injury-ravaged opening to the campaign, the 21-year-old was afforded half an hour to make his mark in Barcelona’s Champions League meeting with Young Boys.

As much, though, at first, came in a surprise position on the pitch. After Pedri was hauled off, Hansi Flick opted to test out Ansu in an unfamiliar role, in the middle of the park. Speaking to the media in the aftermath of Tuesday’s matchup, the subject of exactly why he opted to utilise the Spanish international – a natural winger – in midfield was in turn put to the aforementioned Flick.

And Barcelona’s headmaster went on to explain: “Frenkie was not ready to come on yet, so we had to play Ansu Fati as a midfielder until Frenkie came on.” Conor Laird – GSFN.
