How you pronounce Primark's name might seem obvious - but the issue has been a matter of debate. So much so, in fact, that Primark have had to step in to settle the question. How exactly do you say Primark? You might not have realised there was any confusion, but trust us, there's been plenty.

Despite its establishment back in June 1969, over half a century ago, there remains widespread uncertainty about the correct way to articulate the store's name. Some customers call it 'Pree-Mark', while others opt for 'Pr-I-Mark'. Interestingly, the pronunciation often changes depending on which part of the UK you're in.

The retailer, famed for its budget-friendly fashion finds, has seen its autumn jumpers become a sensation on TikTok this year, reports . Yet the brand's name is just as much a subject of conversation. A query was raised in the Family Lowdown Tips and Ideas group: "How do you pronounce Primark? (The clothes store).

"I thought everyone said it the same until yesterday when I heard someone call it Pr-E-Mark, I say Pr-I-Mark. Which is right?" Opinions varied, with many suggesting 'Pr-Eye-Mark' as the correct form. However, one South Wales shopper mentioned they refer to it as 'Preemark', and another commented: "Pree-mark because we enjoy messing perfectly pronounceable words up in Northern Ireland".

A Tweeter, Dan, also asked: "Does anybody pronounce Primark 'preemark'?" In response, on tweeter said: "Like literally every single person I know pronounces it 'Preemark' cause saying 'Prymark' makes it sounds like you think it's upmarket." Another person added: "Preemark in Middlesbrough". A worker disagreed, though, saying: "I work there.

It's Prymark. Always has been. Always will be.

" So, what's the official verdict? Due to the widespread nature of the debate, Primark has previously had to clarify on a specially created page, stating unequivocally: "We like to use Pr-Eye-Mark." Employing over 80,000 staff across 17 countries in Europe and the US, Primark was established in Ireland in 1969 under the Penneys brand. The company's mission is to "provide affordable choices for everyone, from great quality everyday essentials to stand-out style across women's, men's and kids, as well as beauty, homeware and accessories.

" With a portfolio of 450 stores worldwide, Primark continues to grow. It says it is committed to making sustainable fashion accessible to all, and pledges to protect the planet through its Primark Cares initiative. This strategy aims to focus on giving clothes "a longer life, protecting life on the planet and supporting the livelihoods of the people who make Primark clothes.
