These horror movies soared past low expectations.

No other film genre has fans as enthusiastic as horror; it's as simple as that. We're an optimistic, open-minded bunch who like to see the best in everything, though even we have our limits. And expectations are a funny thing.

O ften, a film basically invites audiences to expect nothing from it, either because the trailer is awful, the premise sounds terrible , or the cast and crew have a poor track record. But expectations are evidently made to be blown apart, and that's precisely what these ten recent horror movies did, each of them far surpassing expectations. Now, that doesn't mean that each of these recent horror films are stone-cold masterpieces - though at least one of them definitely was - but each nevertheless soared far above most reasonable estimates of their quality.

Mileage will surely vary on precisely how much folks dug these movies, though given the woeful first impression they gave off, each turned out far better than anticipated. There's probably a lesson here about not judging a book, or even a film , by its cover, but on the other hand, it's always nice to be surprised. 10.

Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare Expectations were resolutely through the floor for Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare - the latest entry into the so-called "Poohniverse," as was kickstarted by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. On the surface, it appears that every film in this franchise is made less for artistic expression than to cynically cash in on classic IP that's entered the public domain, and this slasher-spiced take on Peter Pan was set to be just the latest. Even accepting that Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 was a surprising improvement upon its predecessor, that seemed more likely to be a fluke than the sign of an encouraging trend.

But to the credit of filmmaker Scott Chambers here, he's clearly tried to make something that isn't a craven cash-grab. There's a relatively inspired remix of Peter Pan lore going on, aided by a genuinely skin-crawling performance from Martin Portlock as the murderous Peter and unexpectedly solid production values. Would most people call Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare a great movie? No, but it at least suggests that the people behind these films aren't merely trying to peddle soulless pap.
