Another dozen eminent western Manitobans have been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for significant contributions to their communities, region and province. Thirty Westman medal recipients were named last month and are among the 30,000 Canadians to receive the honour.

The 12 recipients named this week were selected by the region’s Progressive Conservative MLAs from the areas they serve, with two from each constituency. In Agassiz, the recipients are Eileen Clarke, a former Gladstone mayor and provincial cabinet minister, and Robert Wheeler, a Treherne native who was instrumental in establishing the South Central Soil and Water Management Association and other agricultural bodies. The Brandon West recipients are Shaun Cameron, a historian, filmmaker and Brandon city councillor, and Barry Cooper, a former Brandon Chamber of Commerce president and committed community volunteer.

In Riding Mountain, the medals go to Glen Findlay, a former provincial cabinet minister who was inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2015, and Harold Gilleshammer, a longtime provincial cabinet minister and former PC deputy leader. The Spruce Woods recipients are Diane Peters, a well-known philanthropist and fundraiser who grew up in Cardale, and W. J.

Strath, a 96-year-old veteran of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons who provided decades of service to the Souris area. In Swan River, the medals were awarded to Leonard Derkach, a former provincial cabinet minister and mayor of the Municipality of Russell-Binscarth, and Dr. Gene Theodore, who set up his medical practice in Swan River in 1965 and served the area for 52 years.

The Turtle Mountain recipients are Mike Johnson, a community leader in Baldur and inductee to several sport halls of fame, and Wayne Nichol, an advocate and community leader in Killarney who passed away on Feb. 26. The 12 Westman recipients were chosen by their respective MLAs — Greg Nesbitt (Riding Mountain), Jodie Byram (Agassiz), Doyle Piwniuk (Turtle Mountain), Wayne Balcaen (Brandon West), Rick Wowchuk (Swan River) and former MLA Grant Jackson (Spruce Woods).

“We are very pleased and proud to have selected these Coronation Medal recipients, all of whom stand out as deserving of this honour,” Nesbitt said on behalf of the Westman PC MLAs. “It is fulfilling and inspiring to my colleagues and me to recognize these citizens for their contributions, achievements, leadership and volunteerism.” The 12 recipients are among 166 Manitobans to be awarded with Coronation Medals by the Province of Manitoba.

Struck in nickel-silver and manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint, the medals are administered by the Chancellery of Honours at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. » The Brandon Sun Advertisement.
