14-year-old boy riding scooter dies, 12-year-old pillion rider injured after being hit by cab in Yerawada

Pune: A 14-year-old boy riding a scooter died after a cab hit the two-wheeler in front of the Anusuya school along Phulenagar-Golf Course Road in Yerawada around 3pm on Monday. A 12-year-old girl riding pillion with him suffered injuries to her shoulders and legs and was taken to a hospital from the spot, the police said. The Yerawada police on Monday night arrested the cab driver, Rajendra Gunjal of Sangamner in Ahilyanagar district, on Nagar Road.

According to the police, the two children were headed to a swimming pool on the scooter at the time of the accident. They took a U-turn on the road when the car heading towards Golf Course Chowk from Vishrantwadi hit them from behind. The cab driver fled from the spot, but the police secured the car's registration number from CCTV footage and used it to track him down for arrest.



"When the cab hit them, the boy fell onto the road and suffered serious head injuries," said sub-inspector Nandkumar Kekan of the Yerawada police. He added, "The deceased teen's parents are casual workers. The scooter is owned by a man from their neighbourhood and the boy had borrowed it.

We will also take action against the scooter owner for handing over the vehicle to a minor."
