Two fishermen from Bataan province were elected as directors in the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources' (BFAR) Fisherfolk Director Program. The 2025 National Fisherfolk Director was Avelino “Ka Ave” Capuli , while Ricardo “Ka Ric” Cruz, Jr. will serve as the 2025 Regional Fisherfolk Director.
The agency said that the duo's election to the positions will help in promoting participatory governance. BFAR said this will ensure that policies and programs affecting the fisheries sector are shaped by the input of those who rely on the sea for their livelihood. Capuli, a veteran fisherfolk leader, brings decades of experience and grassroots service to the national office while Cruz is the president of the Samahan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda ng Pilar (Bataan).
Every May, BFAR launches the Fisherfolk Director Program celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolk Month, giving deserving fisherfolk leaders the opportunity to serve temporarily as directors at the national and regional levels..
