The New Orleans Saints finally made their move for a quarterback. After passing on the position at No. 9 overall in the first round, the Saints came back around with a handful of options still available, including Colorado's Shedeur Sanders.
Despite this, New Orleans opted to take Louisville's Tyler Shough with the No. 40 overall pick. Shough is a polarizing prospect simply considering his age and injury history.
He will be 26 years old at the beginning of the season and despite being in college for seven years, he only has one full season of starting experience due to three major season-ending injuries. On the field, Shough certainly brings some appeal with his size, velocity and arm strength. In 2024, he completed 62.
7% of his passes for 3,195 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. Here's what Dane Brugler of The Athletic said in his scouting report about Shough: "Overall, Shough is overaged and needs to cut back on some of the high-risk passing decisions, but he is a gifted thrower with the functional mobility to work of schedule. He has the tools to work his way up a depth chart and make plays once on the field.
" Given the question marks surrounding Derek Carr's shoulder injury, the Saints needed to make some kind of move at the quarterback position. Whether it will work out remains to be seen, but he will join a room that currently includes Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener behind Carr.
