Former Edo State Governor, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, has declared his support for a southern presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, citing equity and fairness as his guiding principles. Speaking during a condolence visit to Senator Rowland Owie in Benin City on Tuesday, Igbinedion said he remains a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and believes power should rotate to the South in 2027, before returning to the North in 2031. “I believe in equity, and that equity means it is the turn of a southerner to be president.
If a southern PDP candidate emerges, I will support them. After that, in 2031, it will be the turn of the North,” he stated. Igbinedion also addressed ongoing defections from the PDP, downplaying their impact and expressing confidence that many defectors would eventually return.
“I don’t worry so much because Nigerian politicians swing from one side to the other. Those who left may come back, or even join a new party that may emerge.” The former governor led a PDP delegation to commiserate with Senator Owie, whose wife, Lady Helen Owie, passed away in Abuja on April 9 at age 71.
Igbinedion praised the couple’s enduring marriage and described Owie as a “man full of life.” PDP caretaker chairman in Edo State, Tony Aziegbemi, and other party stalwarts, including Tom Ikimi and Stephen Idehenre, were also present at the visit..
