The incident occurred late Wednesday night after a trailer truck lost control on the avenue’s inclined slope, according to a report from the Marikina City Police Station.

The truck hit a compact car, a sedan, a sport utility vehicle and two passenger jeepneys, and left three people dead and 10 others injured, Marikina DRRMO chief Dave David said in a radio interview over dzBB on Thursday. The vehicles were traversing the eastbound lane of Fortune Avenue, Marikina police said. “According to the driver of [the truck], the vehicle lost its brake mechanism, causing it to roll backward uncontrollably,” the police report explained.

“It continued in reverse until the trailer chassis and the carried container overturned and crushed [three vehicles]. The sudden backward motion triggered a chain-reaction collision involving [two more vehicles],” it added.
