The past weekend left Charleston police with three different shootings to investigate. The first occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m.
Aug. 26 as Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies pursued a stolen vehicle in West Ashley, according to a statement released by Sgt. Chris Stinson.
Police ended their pursuit when the vehicle entered downtown Charleston. A short time later, police responded to a crash involving the stolen vehicle at Romney and North Romney streets. Officers said a witness approached the vehicle to help but was then shot by someone inside the vehicle.
A hospital treated and released the victim. A police dog unit helped officers find and arrest the vehicle’s teenaged occupants. A 15-year-old was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, and reckless driving.
A 13-year-old was charged with attempted murder, assault and battery, and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime. At approximately 11:30 p.m.
April 26 at Spanish Oaks Apartments in West Ashley, police found a teenager who reported being pistol-whipped, robbed and then shot, all while on the front porch. The victim went to a hospital and is expected to recover. Police say the victim and suspect knew each other.
Early April 27, police patrolling near America and Johnson streets heard about 12 gunshots. They found a teen with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was taken to a hospital.
Stinson said that as police helped the victim, “a large and unruly crowd gathered, creating a volatile situation.” Additional officers were called for help. "This weekend’s violence was largely driven by teenagers with guns," Chief Chito Walker said.
"It is a hard reminder of a deeper issue, one that does not begin on our streets, but at home. These are not isolated events." Anyone with information can anonymously contact Charleston police at 843-720-2422 or submit a tip online at www.
