There are only around 30,000 people in the United States living with ALS and some famous faces are among those afflicted with the disease. Eric Dane just announced he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and there are several other actors who are battling it right now as well. Sadly, we’ve also lost several stars who were diagnosed with ALS.

This list represents just a small number of the influential people who have battled ALS. There is no cure for ALS and while some patients can live for decades, most people usually live for three to five years after their diagnosis. The Mayo Clinic notes that ALS is “a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
