Prayagraj: A4-month-old baby Krishna was successfully treated for a rare condition known as encephalocele at Narayan Swaroop Hospital in Prayagraj. Born with a large encephalocele, a condition where part of the brain protrudes from the skull, Krishna's head gradually increased in size, causing significant difficulty in the baby's growth and development. The baby's father, Shravan Kumar, expressed hope that sharing their story would help others understand the challenges faced by children with rare conditions and encourage further medical research into such diseases.
The complex surgery was conducted by a team of doctors, including Dr Rajeev Singh, Dr JK Singh, Dr Nitesh Kumar Singh, and Dr Gautam Gupta. The doctors performed a four-hour long procedure to resect encephalocele and repair the skull, after which Krishna was shifted to the NICU for post-surgery care. Remarkably, after seven days of observation and recovery, the baby was discharged in good general condition with no neurological abnormalities.
Encephalocele is a rare congenital birth defect where brain tissue protrudes through an opening in the skull, typically caused by a failure of the neural tube to close during early fetal development. Though exact cause remains unknown, factors like lack of folic acid during pregnancy and genetic mutations are believed to contribute, said Dr Singh. Doctors emphasise importance of early diagnosis and adequate folic acid intake during pregnancy can reduce the risk of such conditions.
