[email protected] Ludhiana: In a city where traffic rule violations are the norm rather than the exception, eight roads will be made model roads where such violations will not be tolerated.
As part of the exercise to be started this week, the focus will primarily be on encroachments and wrong parking. Work of marking white and yellow lines on some of the roads has started. Ludhiana police have selected eight roads covering all eight zones.
Initially, in-charges of all the eight zones will physically monitor traffic rule violators. After a month, police plan to install CCTV cameras on the roads to capture and penalise violators. Roads to be made model roads include Field Ganj Road from Jagraon Bridge to Civil Hospital on both sides in zone 1, Rahon Road from Jodhewal Chowk to Jangirpur Road cut in zone 2, Bhamian Road from New Onkar Vihar crossing to Bhamian Colony crossing in zone 3, Chandigarh Road from Government High School, Mundian crossing to 33 Feet Road vegetable market stretch in zone 4, ATI Road from Arora Chowk to End Road (Waheguru Road crossing) in zone 5, Pakhowal Road from Sidhwan Canal Bridge to Indoor Stadium in zone 6, Dugri Road from Atam Park to Libra crossing in zone 7, and Haibowal area from Bhuriwala Gurudwara to Haibowal Police Station in zone 8.
Police commissioner Swapan Sharma, said, "When I joined, I shared my priorities for the city, which include resolving traffic menace. Traffic congestion has always been a big issue in Ludhiana. About a decade ago, when I was posted as ACP, Ludhiana, I launched an anti-encroachment drive in several areas.
Over time, the traffic issue has gotten worse here. Two of the major reasons for the traffic havoc are wrong parking of vehicles and encroachments on roads." He added, "We have identified eight roads in different zones that we are picking up in the first phase, to be made model roads.
Here, police will adopt a no tolerance policy for traffic norm violations. The municipal corporation has also been involved in removal of encroachments from these roads, whether done by shopkeepers or vendors. While shopkeepers will be made to keep their goods inside the shops, the municipal corporation is working to shift vendors to other designated spots.
" The police commissioner also said that work of marking yellow and white lines on roads is underway and any vehicle parked outside the line will be towed away and challaned. He also made it clear that challans will also be served on encroachers. "Zone in-charges will supervise these roads for enforcement and in the next phase, we will get CCTV cameras installed to ensure enforcement," he said, adding that after a month, police will include more areas and roads in the category of no tolerance zones.
According to Sharma, an emergency response system (ERS) had been introduced, integrating a command-and-control centre, wireless control room, PCR vans, and bikes to ensure swift response and smooth vehicular movement.
