Pune: Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh on Tuesday demanded that the central govt should release the movie "Phule" without any cuts. During his interaction with reporters after visiting the city office of AAP, he blamed the central and state govts for the censor board's decision to postpone the film's release. "While movies like ‘Kashmir Files', ‘Kerala Files' and others that spread hatred in society could be released in the country, why a film based on the life of Phule facing opposition? The film depicts the contribution of Mahatma Phule and Savitribai in the field of education, their struggle to open the education sector for marginalised communities and women.

The opposition to it shows the mentality of the govt. Movies spreading hatred can be released, but a movie on the social life of reformers cannot be released under the Modi govt," Singh said. Calling the censor board's decision to postpone the movie's release an insult to Dalit and other marginalised communities, AAP's Rajya Sabha member said, "When people across the country celebrated the birth anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar, it is disappointing to see the opposition to the movie.

The Dalit community draws inspiration from the Phule couple. The govt's decision is an insult to the entire community." After the trailer of the movie was released, some Brahmin organisations objected to it.

They claimed that the community was being shown in a poor light. The movie was to be released on April 11, the birth anniversary of Jyotiba Phule. Amid protests, its release has been postponed to April 25.

Singh said, "The director of the movie is a Brahmin. He has clarified that he has shown only the facts. He said while some Brahmins opposed Phule, there were some who supported him.

That also has been shown in the movie. It is really sad that after over 75 years of India's Independence, there is opposition to a movie on Phule. We demand the central govt release the movie on April 25 without any cuts.
