Aaron Rodgers refused to take accountability with the New York Jets in a crucial moment of their 2024 season which looked to have spelt the end of his time with the team...
and potentially in the NFL. Looking back to last season, Rodgers and the Jets raced into a 14-0 lead against the Seattle Seahawks in the first quarter , but he went on to make multiple mistakes including throwing an interception which Pro Bowler Leonard Williams returned for a touchdown with New York going on to lose the game. After the game, he did not place the blame on himself in a struggling performance, something that had angered Jets fans.
Just a month later, it was made aware that he would be released. After becoming a free agent, Rodgers was linked to the New York Giants and the Seattle Seahawks , but both teams opted to go different routes by bringing in Russell Wilson and Sam Darnold . The Minnesota Vikings , emerged as a candidate, but they appear to be committed to second-year signal-caller J.
J. McCarthy . This, leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers as the lone team who appear to have concrete interest in signing him and making the 41-year-old their starting quarterback.
However, Rodgers is refusing to commit to the team, despite being in their facilities and discussing the parameters of a deal. On the Pat McAfee Show this week, Rodgers said: "I'll set it all straight. From the jump, I'm in a different phase of my life.
I'm 41 years old, I'm in a serious relationship, I have off the field stuff going on that requires my attention. I have personal commitments I made not knowing what my future is going to look like after last year that are important to me. And I have, you know, a couple of people in my inner inner circle who are really battling some difficult stuff.
“So I have a lot of things that are taking my attention - and have beginning in January - away from football. And that's been where I've been focusing most of my attention on.” His words will no doubt anger Steelers fans, with the quarterback essentially holding them up.
Should no deal be signed within the coming days though, Rodgers risks losing his place as the starter with Pittsburgh, with the team potentially drafting a quarterback in this year's class. The Steelers have been linked with Jaxson Dart, with Shedeur Sanders also now potentially dropping to them with the 21st pick. Should they select a quarterback, Rodgers will immediately lose leverage.
