A father and son duo is walking almost 140-miles across North Wales to help raise vital funds for charity. At 77 years of age, Barry Hughes is proving that age is no barrier when it comes to giving back. Earlier this week, the well-known community champion set off on an inspiring 140-mile sponsored walk with his son, Stephen Hughes, an army veteran, to raise funds for two incredible charities.

Together, they are tackling the Welsh Camino — a journey as physically demanding as it is meaningful. Also known as the North Wales Pilgrims Way, the journey will see Barry and Stephen travel along a route across North Wales, which connects historic churches, coastal paths, and ancient pilgrim routes. All funds raised will go to the Wrexham-based mental health charity, Advance Brighter Futures, and 2Wish Cymru, which provides support to families who have experienced the sudden loss of a child.

Barry is no stranger to giving back. For over 25 years, he has run the Activ8 Community Sports Centre in Bradley, dedicating his time and energy to promoting health, fitness, and unity within the local area. Over the years, he has completed numerous charity walks, consistently raising money for various causes and making a tangible difference to the lives of those around him.

Supporters gathered to see the pair off at the start of their journey on April 21, with Tina Mannering, local councillor and deputy mayor, stating: “Barry does so much for us. Now we need to support him.” Due to limitations with online donation platforms, separate links have been created for each charity, as well as one combined donation page: For those who prefer traditional methods, donations and sponsor forms are also available at Activ8 Community Gym.
