A sign of spring is on the near horizon for Mead Hall , with the strawberry festival set for Saturday, April 26, on the school's Aiken Prep campus. This year's festivities are to run from 10 a.m.
to 2 p.m., with truckloads of strawberries and related treats in the spotlight, along with such other options as a dunk tank, carnival games, several bounce houses, a mobile putting green and a variety of vendor booths.
"There's homemade strawberry ice cream and pound cake, so we do strawberry shortcakes there," said Taylor Wood, the school's PTO president. She also expressed appreciation for this year's sponsors, including Aiken Pest Control , Cold Creek Nurseries , Toby Marks Development and the law firm of Johnson, Johnson, Whittle, Lancer and Staggs. The main attraction comes from about 20 miles away: the acreage of Gurosik's Berry Plantation , in Edgefield County .
Spartanburg and Chesterfield counties are traditionally among South Carolina's top strawberry producers. The Mead Hall festival, originally a creation of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, dates back to the early 1980s and was established to help boost the church's local charitable efforts.
California produces about 90 percent of the United States' strawberries, with the next-largest producers being Florida, North Carolina, Oregon and Washington, in that order. For more information on the Strawberry Festival, visit meadhallschool.org .
