Aiming to turn India Post profitable in 5-6 yrs: Scindia

(ANI Photo/Jitender Gupta) New Delhi: Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is looking to turn around India Post into a profit-making entity in the coming 5-6 years and is enabling various measures to achieve the target. Speaking to ET, the Minister said India Post currently has expenditure of around Rs 35,000 to Rs 36,000 crore while the revenues are in the range of Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000 crore, leading to a cost to the government of around Rs 22,000 crore.

Advt The Minister, however, is looking to transform the India Post and make it a profit-making entity in 5-6 years. “So that's a work in progress, and it's a huge project for me and an area of great passion for me. We are doing a lot of work, and we hope to become more efficient in the days to come, then a DHL or USPS or Japan Post,” the Minister said.

Regarding satcom, the Minister reiterated that spectrum for satellite will be given administratively to all players as it’s a shared resource. On Starlink, Scindia said, the moment the company ticks all the boxes in terms of compliances, a license will be given.

Talking about his key priorities for the sector, the Minister said, “Provide customers with safe, secure, full access to the world in terms of opportunity, because this box (mobile phone) carries with it opportunity, it does not carry with it only connectivity or voice.” He said that to be able to provide that opportunity, India has already become the first in the world in terms of 5G rollout. “I am very confident that we will be number one in terms of all forms of connectivity, including satellite, OFC broadband across the board.

Second, India Post's ambition and third, actualising the Prime Minister's vision for the Northeast in terms of connectivity,” he added.
