Saturday’s Elective Congress of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) will witness a two-horse race for the presidential slot as delegates choose a new team for the Committee for the next four years.Following the withdrawal of the incumbent President, Ben Nunoo Mensah, from the race, the stage is set for a keen contest between a for­mer Secretary General of the GOC, Mr Richard Akpokavie, who is touted as a favourite in the contest and Michael Odum Aggrey.Interestingly, both candidates appear very confident but have kept their cards close to the chest, anticipating wins that will give them an opportunity to bring fresh ideas to the GOC to steer Ghana sports forwards.

At the close of nomination last week following a peaceful extraordi­nary congress, the two were the only candidates registered for the posi­tion of presidency but surprisingly witnessing single representations for other top position in the manage­ment board of the committee.By the list of candidates released by the GOC, Mr Mawuko Kweku Afadzinu was billed to go unop­posed for the position of First Vice President just as the Second Vice President position going for Ghana Taekwondo Federation boss, Fred­erick Lartey Out, without a fight.Mr Mike AggreyMr Richard AkpokavieAurora Commodore-TopparMr Frederick Lartey OtuThe position of the Third Vice President, however, barring any last minute surprise may see a contest between Mr Ernest Danso and Mohammed Mahadi.



Incumbent Secretary-General, Mohammed Baadae Shanoon, would not enjoy the luxury of going unopposed as he faces a challenge from Mohammed Muniru Kassim for the Secretary-General position.But whoever comes up top would work with the President of Ghana Athletics, Bawa Fuseini, who joins the GOC ranks as Assistant Secre­tary General unopposed.Two heavyweights in Ghana sports – Evans Yeboah, President of the Badminton Association of Ghana (BAG) and Isaac Aboagye Duah, President of the Ghana Tennis Federation (GTF), are set to vie for the position of Treasurer with three others – Bernard Quartey (Ghana Boxing Federation), Edward Patrick Nii Lante Banerman (Hand­ball Association of Ghana) and Au­rora Commodore-Toppar (Ghana Baskeball Association) vying for the position of Assistant Treasurer.

In all, eight candidates are ex­pected to seek for a place among a group of five representing Olympic sports. They are George Lamptey, Delphina O. Quaye, Prosper Har­rison Addo, Richmond Rexford Quarcoo, Albert Kyei Frimpong, George Tettey, Benjamin K.

D. As­ante and Kamal Sulley.The single slot allotted to Non-Olympic sports would be con­tested for by Abdul Hayye Yartey and George Owusu-Ansah (Nana Adu Mankata II) as Samuel Tetteh Ayer goes unopposed for the One Affiliated slot.

The three other members to join the executive would be selected from a group of eight contestants, namely Emmanuel Djani Nikoi, Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah Asare, Michael Ntow Ayeh, Nathaniel Johnson, Edwin Amankwah, Rafatu Inusah, Philip Elikem Ameku and Leonard K.
