Manchester United are through to the Europa League semi-finals after Thursday’s drama-filled 120 minutes at Old Trafford against Lyon.Old Trafford bore witness to one of the craziest games of football ever as the Europa League quarter-final lived up to its blockbuster billing.Manchester United clearly intended to make quick work of Lyon, with a fast start seeing Ruben Amorim’s side sitting comfortably 2-0 up at half-time.
From this position, poor finishing saw United fail to extend the lead as Lyon came back with two goals in normal time and another two in extra time putting the game out of reach – or so they would have thought.Malick Fofana admitted that Lyon simply switched off, much to United’s delight, as a comeback for the ages was staged, with Casemiro spearheading this with two assists and winning a penalty. After a Bruno Fernandes penalty, it was Kobbie Mainoo who showed great composure to score an equaliser for United, which at the time set the game up for dreaded penalties.
But then Harry Maguire stepped up with a massive season-saving goal for United, handing the Red Devils a 5-4 lead and progression to a semi-final against Athletic Bilbao.READ MORE: Who is Amad Diallo? But his one-word response to Maguire’s winning goal was that of a fan, and it summed up the relief United must have felt.Amad tweeted: “Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssdeeesssdsssddsssssssssssss”.Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssdeeesssdsssddsssssssssssss😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭— Amad (@Amaddiallo_19) April 17, 2025This was followed by a string of crying face emojis, demonstrating the emotion Amad must have been going through at the time.
It was the perfect response, with no real words capable of describing the magic witnessed. In the aftermath of the game, Amad hadn’t settled down, sending out a selfie with Alejandro Garnacho and Manuel Ugarte with messages to both.“United will never die.
Congrats, Manu [Manuel Ugarte] for your ____ goal. ____ Garna [Alejandro Garnacho for that miss. You gave us heart pain.
”This was clearly a message in satire, but showed that the United side are unaffected by critique as the message read similarly to what you may see from fan accounts on X. But the ‘heart pain’ message is one fans can relate to. Amad embodies the fans, explaining why he is such a favourite.

Meet Man Utd’s dazzling ArgentineManchester United can go on and win the Europa League nowAfter such a brilliant night, which showed lots of heart and desire to fight back in a game which looked lost, United surely sit at the top of the favourites list to go all the way.Another reason progressing is so important is that Amad is battling back from injury, and his return at some point in May would be a welcome boost that could inspire the club to glory.Bilbao did not look perfect in their win over Rangers, which should inspire confidence that the La Liga outfit can be beaten over two legs next month before what looks likely to be an all-English clash in the final against Tottenham.
United could be back at almost full strength by the time the final rolls around, with Matthijs de Ligt also expected to return, which bodes well and gives fans something to look forward to and believe in..
