Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy ReviewThe labels of remake and remaster are tossed around so frequently and interchangeably in the game world they’ve kind of lost their meaning. They used to mean very specific things. A remaster was a way of cleaning up outdated or buggy code and maybe adding some graphical polish.

A remake was a more substantial project. Remakes usually strip an old game down to the basic concepts and build them back up. You have games like the “remaster” of The Last of Us Part 2 — a title only a few years old — and then you have games like the new release of Amerzone-The Explorer’s Legacy.

Amerzone -The Explorer’s Legacy lies somewhere in between the lands of remake and remaster. The original Amerzone comes from the early days of point-and-click adventure puzzle games, picking up where Myst and Riven left off. Released in 1999, it developed a faithful following and became something of a genre classic along with the developer’s Syberia.

Years later, the player is tasked with returning the egg to the Amerzone and carrying on Valembois’ work in the jungle.

Amerzone’s puzzle solutions were less about pixel hunting — though there’s some of that, too — and more about reading journals and careful observation of the environment. The 1999 original was mechanically and graphically a work of its time. It was too often a passive experience.

The creatures and environments of the Amerzone are considerably more believable. There’s a great deal more interactivity in Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy. Player movement controls differently, though free movement would bring the title into even more alignment with recent games.

Objects can be turned and examined in more complex ways, and puzzle solutions have been made more elegant. Maybe best of all, there is now a choice of difficulty, Adventurer or Traveler. The latter setting provides more direction, additional hints, and focuses the experience on the world, its mysteries, and the narrative arc.

Adventurer is a hardcore workout for the brain. This is the One1999’s Amerzone was technically a product of its times, but it told a still-interesting and layered story, set in a fantastical world.
