Vadodara: Your monthly household budgets are set to be upset from Thursday morning. India's dairy major, Amul, decided to increase milk prices by Rs 2 per litre with effect from May 1 in all markets across the country, including Gujarat. Amul's decision to increase milk prices comes close on the heels of Mother Dairy's decision to hike prices.
Mother Dairy increased milk prices by Rs 2 per litre with effect from Wednesday. The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), the body that markets dairy products under the brand name Amul, decided to increase milk prices in all the milk variants, including Amul Gold, Amul Taaza, Amul Shakti, Amul Cow milk, Amul Slim and Trim, Amul Buffalo milk, and Amul T-special. With the price hike, Amul Gold will now cost Rs 68 per litre instead of Rs 66 per litre, while Amul Buffalo milk will cost Rs 74 instead of Rs 72.
Similarly, Amul Shakti will cost Rs 62 per litre instead of Rs 60 per litre, whereas Amul Taaza will cost Rs 56 per litre instead of Rs 54 per litre. The price of Amul Cow milk increased from Rs 56 per litre to Rs 58 per litre, whereas that of Amul Slim and Trim increased from Rs 48 per litre to Rs 50 per litre. GCMMF's managing director, Jayen Mehta, said that the increase of Rs 2 per litre translates to a range of 3-4% increase in MRP, which is much lower than average food inflation.
"This price hike is being done due to an increase in the input costs of production of milk to our 36 lakh milk producers. Our member unions also increased the farmer's price in the same proportion over the last year," a release issued by the federation said. "It is worthwhile to note that Amul offered benefits to the consumers by giving 50 ml and 100 ml extra milk on one litre and two litre packs for almost five months last year.
Thereafter, they also reduced the prices of one litre packs by Rs 1 across all markets since Jan 2025," the release mentioned. In June last year, Amul had increased the price of all the milk variants, including Amul Gold, Amul Shakti, Amul Taaza, Amul Buffalo, and Amul Cow milk, each by Rs 2 and Rs 3 per litre. With the latest price hike, Amul also withdrew the price reduction on one litre pouches that was implemented in Jan this year.
The price of a one litre pouch of Amul Gold will now be Rs 67, that of Amul Buffalo milk will be Rs 73, that of Amul Taaza will be Rs 55, while a one litre pouch of Amul T-special will be Rs 63..
