Angelina Jolie’s latest release, the gripping biopic of Maria Callas, is all set to arrive for the Indian audiences. Steering away from her usual action-packed roles, Angelina Jolie stepped into a different role with the biopic film Maria.
Set in 1970s Paris, Maria traces the turbulent last years of the revered opera singer and the challenges that she faced due to her growing fame. Directed by Pablo Larraín, Maria received a warm standing ovation at various screenings, including the Venice Film Festival. Ready to bring the unspoken story of Maria Callas, the documentary film will reportedly be released on Lionsgate Play in India on May 9.
Besides Jolie, the film also features actors like Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The film was earlier released in theatres across the US on November 27, 2024, before it made its way to Netflix on December 27, 2024. Recently, at the 97th Academy Awards, Maria bagged a nomination for Best Cinematography, whereas Jolie missed out on being chosen among the Best Actress nominees.
About Maria Callas Also known as La Divina, Maria Callas was among the most renowned opera singers of all time. She rose to fame in the 1950s, further credited for the bel canto revival. The film focuses on her final days after she retreats to Paris, where she lived along with her housekeepers, further reckoning with the ups and downs of her career and journey.
Her tumultuous personal life also remains in focus in the biopic. Speaking about her role, Angelina Jolie, in a YouTube interview, shared her experience after stepping into the shoes of the character. “To be very candid, it was the therapy I didn’t realize I needed.
I had no idea how much I was holding in and not letting out. So, the challenge wasn’t technical; it was an emotional experience to find my voice, to be in my body, to express," she continued. On the work front, Jolie will be next seen in Stitches by Alice Winocour.
The film also features Louis Garrel and Ella Rumpf. A release date is yet to be confirmed..
