Apple Resumes Talks With OpenAI To Bring Generative AI Features To The Upcoming iOS 18

Apple and Google have been discussing bringing AI features to the upcoming iOS18 operating system. Now the Tim Cook-led company has reportedly 'renewed' talks with OpenAI to bring the much-talked-about generative artificial intelligence features to the iPhones. According to a Bloomberg report, Apple and OpenAI had begun discussions about a deal earlier this year, however, the discussions might not have progressed a lot since then. If the discussions move forward then we might see a chatbot-like feature in iOS 18.On another note, Apple has also continued discussions with Google simultaneously to license its Gemini AI chatbot. According to the report, it is possible that Apple might reach an agreement with both OpenAI and Google or end up sticking to just one for its chatbot.As per other reports, Apple is also in talking terms with Baidu to bring the gen AI capabilities to users in China, as Google doesn't have a presence there. Apple is promoting iOS 18 as one of its most significant software updates yet. Following its annual tradition, Apple is expected to introduce iOS 18 at its Worldwide Developers Conference, with the new update possibly debuting on the upcoming iPhone 16 series later this year.Apple's AI Model Might Be 'On Device'Bloomberg also recently revealed that Apple is working on developing a large language model (LLM) that will be entirely on-device. In simpler words, it means that it will be powered by a processor inside the phone rather than run from the cloud. It also means that the AI chatbot will be less powerful and knowledgeable than most of the commercial chatbots that exist in the market at the moment, such as ChatGPT or Gemini.The on-device model will also help in reducing response time and provide access to services without internet or in areas with low connectivity. It will also make it easier for Apple to maintain privacy.
