In 2024, Apple’s App Store facilitated ₹44,447 crore ($5.31 billion) in developer billings and sales, with 94% of the revenue going directly to developers and businesses, according to a report by IIM Ahmedabad professor Viswanath Pingali. The findings highlight how the App Store is driving growth for developers in India, helping them reach global audiences and fostering entrepreneurship.

Approximately 80% of these earnings came from international users, with Indian apps being downloaded over 755 million times globally—twice as many as five years ago. Apple says (through a study) that the App Store Commerce in India in 2024 was $5.3 billion.

Many Indian apps now rank in the top 100 charts across 70 storefronts worldwide, with strong contributions from sectors like quick commerce, food delivery, travel, and gaming.

Small developers have experienced significant success, with a 74% increase in earnings from 2021 to 2024, largely due to Apple’s App Store Small Business Program. Additionally, Apple’s focus on user and developer security resulted in preventing over $7 billion in potentially fraudulent transactions from 2020 to 2023. However, these findings come amidst growing regulatory scrutiny, especially in the European Union, where Apple was fined €500 million for allegedly restricting developers from offering alternative payment methods outside the App Store, violating the Digital Markets Act.
