Baldur’s Gate 3 had an active modding scene even before the game’s full release, but as Larian starts to leave the beloved RPG behind instead of creating “boring" DLC, the community is working to make sure the game lives forever.Making used of cracked mod tools, modders are now creating entire custom campaigns that allow them to essentially make entirely new games in the BG3 engine. Path to Menzoberranzan, a mod created by hundreds of talented fans, is one such campaign with six-to-eight original companions, an entirely new city, quest lines, factions and more to explore, but the team knows they couldn’t make this project without the framework Larian left behind.

Larian are the giants of Baldur’s Gate 3Speaking to VideoGamer, the team explained that Larian has essentially left behind the perfect blueprint to create amazing Dungeons and Dragons games that are also accessible to players. Just like Fallout designer Bruce Nesmith explained recently, Baldur’s Gate 3’s accessible approach to D&D gameplay allows the mod team to focus on crafting interesting combat encounters and, more important, a strong story.“I always think of a specific quote when I'm working on this project: ‘If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants’,” the project’s art director Morgan Camp told VideoGamer.

“And that's definitely what Larian is for us. They are the giants that we're standing on the shoulders of.”The team explained that the mod’s impressive locations and dense story plans are only possible because of the “incredibly systems that have made all of this possible to begin with”.

While there have been minor worries about DMCA claims, Larian Studios has already revealed its intent to protect modders, such as the Stardew Valley team behind Baldur’s Village.“We're all united by a deep and profound love and admiration for their craft,” Camp continued. “It’s our hope to, you know, replicate even a fraction of that and bring that back to the community.

”Path to Menzoberranzan is a stunning, expertly-crafted mod that only exists because of Larian's efforts.Path to Menzoberranzan may be the biggest Baldur’s Gate 3 mod around, but there are a tonne of smaller campaigns in the works. One campaign takes players back to areas from World of Warcraft, another takes players into space, and another is set in a demonic rock concert.

There’s a tonne of possibilities, and Larian’s tools have made them possible..
