PORTLAND, Ore. — Spring has sprung, and so have seasonal allergies. Allergy sufferers in Portland often come to dread this time of year when the sun comes back and the pollen count starts ticking up.
If it feels like you're having a particularly hard time with Portland's spring seasons, there's a reason for that; one local expert said the Willamette Valley is particularly bad for allergies because of the region's geography and the grass grown in the area. Emily Trevillian with the Allergy Clinic in Portland said when it comes to allergies, one of the most important things to remember is to not wait until the symptoms are full blown before taking medication. "One of the mistakes I see people make is intermittently using their nasal steroid spray, like Flonase or Nasacort.
Those medications in particular need to be used routinely to get any [...
] maximal benefit from them," she said. "So, my recommendation and our provider's recommendation here is always to start your nasal steroid spray early in the season." For people taking allergy pills, Trevillian said it’s important to take them consistently as well, since it’s easier to keep symptoms controlled rather than try to get a flare-up under control.
She also said it’s beneficial to remember to do all the usual things like closing your windows and using air conditioning if you have it. If things are especially bad, allergy experts also say it’s helpful for people to change clothes and take a shower when they get home, to rid themselves of as much pollen as possible..
