Ateneo and UP now share the top spot as the best universities in the country

Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines (UP) now share the top spot as the best universities in the country, based on the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings. Based on the results released Thursday, Ateneo and UP both placed in the 501-600 bracket out of 853 universities from 35 countries and territories in Asia. This, however, means that Ateneo dropped in the ranking this year as it was in the 401–500 bracket in 2024 for the same category.

UP, meanwhile, maintained its position in the same rank as last year. The ranking of De La Salle University (DLSU) also declined from the 501–600 bracket in 2024 to the 601+ bracket in 2025. For this year, Mapúa University, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, and University of Santo Tomas (UST) joined the DLSU in the 601+ rank.

Both Mapúa and UST were in the same spot in 2024. There were 15 other higher education institutions listed as “reporter,” meaning they submitted data but did not meet the eligibility criteria this year. Tsinghua University In all of Asia, Mainland China once again led the rankings, with Tsinghua University in first place for seven consecutive years now.

Five of the top 10 universities in the continent were from China. Institutions from Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong also made it into the top 10. According to the THE, the Asia University Rankings used the same framework as the global rankings for the methodology, but the weightings were recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions.

The THE used 18 performance indicators, which were grouped into five areas: Teaching (the learning environment); Research environment (volume, income and reputation); Research quality (citation impact, research strength, research excellence and research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry (income and patents). —VAL, GMA Integrated News.
