AT&T teamed with Helium Network to offer decentralised high-speed data to its mobile subscribers using the latter’s user-enabled hotspots.Helium Network is a decentralised physical infrastructure network (DePIN) company that allows individuals and organisations to deploy Wi-Fi hotspots in return for cryptocurrency tokens or other rewards.AT&T can expand its mobile service for subscribers when they tap into Helium Network hotspots.
The mobile operator’s subscribers can roam onto Helium Network using its Passpoint-enabled hotspots.Passpoint is a standard developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance which makes Wi-Fi more like cellular connectivity, allowing users to connect to networks automatically and securely.Helium Network claims to have more than 90,000 hotspots across the US and Mexico that are used for its own service.
It currently has over 800,000 customers on its network.Helium Network stated deploying decentralised infrastructure in addition to traditional networks allows mobile operators to offer services in areas with economic or physical hurdles.Amir Haleem, cofounder of Helium and CEO of Helium Mobile stated partnering with AT&T “allows us to rapidly accelerate the adoption of Helium and provide real-world value to both AT&T and its subscribers”.
