Dr. Muluzi took the opportunity to emphasize the need for political tolerance among Malawians, particularly the leadership of various political parties.He stressed that democracy can only flourish in an atmosphere where differences are respected and dialogue is encouraged over conflict.
“Political parties should learn to coexist,” said Dr. Muluzi, who governed Malawi from 1994 to 2004 and was the country’s first democratically elected president under multiparty rule.He reminded the nation that ideological differences must never be allowed to escalate into violence or hatred.
“Our democracy can only thrive if we learn to respect each other, regardless of political affiliations,” Muluzi added, underscoring his longstanding commitment to democratic ideals.The visit by the Malawi Commission for Peace and Unity was part of a broader national campaign aimed at fostering harmony and conflict prevention during the 2025 electoral process.Mary Nkosi, Chairperson of the Commission, said they are currently engaging key political stakeholders throughout Malawi.
She revealed that their mission is to ensure that influential political figures serve as role models and ambassadors of peace during this crucial period in the country’s democratic journey.“We are meeting with key political figures across the country, encouraging them to commit to peaceful conduct before, during and after the polls,” Nkosi said.She noted that sustainable peace requires the commitment of leaders at all levels, especially during times of heightened political activity.
