Liam Cameron’s life story is like something out of a movie. But his blockbuster moment could come on Sunday night against Ben Whittaker. Liam is an inspiration.
Never give up. He almost did but he has found his way back. It was four years ago when he was at the depths of despair, suspended from boxing and drinking to destruction.
It got so bad he ended up in hospital after an overdose. He also lost his step-daughter, Tiegen, in a car crash. Liam had been banned from the sport he loved after a UK Anti-Doping test found traces of cocaine.
It looked all over for him as he struggled outside of the ring. But he found his way back, got into the gym, ran marathons to shed the weight he had piled on and started to get his career and life back on track. He came close to beating Lyndon Arthur last year and then got a chance against supposed rising star Whittaker on a Saudi Arabia show in October.
Few gave him a chance but he was giving the flashy Olympic silver-medallist all sorts of problems before the bout ended in controversy when they fell over the ropes and Whittaker claimed he couldn’t fight on. I knew I had to sign Liam then. There’s something there with the light-heavyweight.
He’s won a Commonwealth title before and he can win belts again. Now he gets a rematch with Whittaker and a handsome pay day at the top of the bill at the bp Pulse arena in Birmingham. There’s been a load of nonsense with the contract and the amount of rounds which was a mess up by Whittaker’s team.
Eventually it got sorted and we agreed to a 10-round bout but a nice, new financial package was also agreed which works out very favourably for Liam. Whittaker has flattered to deceive as a professional and if he doesn’t impress against Liam then there will be questions of where he can go in the paid ranks. What is for sure is that Liam will make it a very hard night’s work and I hope he can get the job done.
