Monty Don, popular host of BBC's 'Gardeners' World', often takes to Instagram to showcase his idyllic cottage garden in Herefordshire. But his page, followed by over 1.3 million green-thumbed fans, became a hotbed of debate when he posted images of two "conifers" that didn't sit right with some followers.
One fan commented: "I love your gardens-but not this one. The conifers look so out of place, especially with the tops being horizontal and not leaving their standard shape. If it were my garden, I would remove them.
I love the tulips, though!" Monty promptly responded, highlighting a common misconception; the trees in question are actually "Irish yews," commonly used by landscape enthusiasts to provide structure or vertical interest within their gardens. He explained: "Each to their own..
. and not conifers but Irish yews looking lovely with their flat tops!" One person commented: "Agree about the trees, find them very off putting.
The rest is really beautiful," reports the Express . Another said: "I don't like the trees, the colour is too dark against the cottage gentleness. But as Monty says, 'Each to their own'.
" Monty, a regular face at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, is now presenting his debut garden for the renowned event. His design, named "The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden," will draw upon his private garden to create a serene space aimed at both dogs and their human companions. The garden is the result of a collaboration between Monty and plant aficionado Jamie Butterworth, who is also an RHS ambassador.
They will partner with Form Plants to make this distinctive garden concept a reality. The garden, "The RHS and Radio 2 Dog Garden", is set to be revealed at the upcoming Chelsea Flower Show, which kicks off on Tuesday, May 20, lasting four days. Monty shared his thrill over the project, remarking: "This is an irresistible opportunity to join with the RHS and Radio 2 to share my love of gardens and dogs at the world's greatest horticultural event.
