Beans on toast may not be the fanciest of meals but it’s satisfyingly tasty and easy to make, making it the ideal snack for when you just want a quick bite. But just because it’s straightforward to make doesn’t mean you can’t jazz it up a little . If you were cooking a steak or a chicken , you would likely season it with various herbs and spices before cooking, so it makes sense that beans on toast is given a similar treatment.
One of the great appeals of beans on toast is that it’s so quick to make - simply open a can of beans, heat it up, butter some toast, and add the two together. But if you’re keen to jazz up your beans on toast and give it an extra kick of flavour, without making the cooking too complicated, then adding marmite is the perfect solution. Once you’ve buttered your toast, simply add a thin layer of marmite on top and this will introduce a deliciously rich, savoury flavour that perfectly complements the sweetness of the beans.
If you’re a big marmite fan, you could also add a small teaspoon to your beans and stir it in as they heat up to help enrich the flavour. Adding marmite to beans on toast is recommended by acclaimed British actor Bill Nighy, who said the dish is something that everyone should be able to make. Speaking in an interview with British Vogue on TikTok , Nighy said: “You should start with beans on toast with marmite underneath.
“You want to super toast the toast - it’s got to be crisp - then you apply the butter, and then a liberal amount of marmite. And the beans have to be red red hot. “And you only introduce the beans to the butter, marmite and toast at the very last moment.
And you need a spare bit of marmite toast on the side, and then you need a glass of orange juice with lots of ice and a couple of limes squeezed into it. And there you have it.” For those who want to be a bit more adventurous, you can always top your beans and marmite on toast with a helping of melted cheddar cheese, as this will add an extra burst of flavour and together with the marmite it will tone down the overall sweetness of the dish.
Bold Bean Co says: “Preheat the grill to a medium-high heat. Melt the butter in a small pan over a medium heat. Pour in the beans and add the marmite and mix well to combine.
Add half of the grated cheese and stir until melted. “Put a piece of bread onto a grill-proof pan or rack and spoon over the bean mixture. Top with the remaining grated cheese and pop under the grill for 3-4 minutes or until golden and bubbling on top.
Finish with cracked black pepper and serve immediately.”.
