TWIN FALLS — College of Southern Idaho softball head coach Nick Baumert boasts a jersey in his office from when he reached 700 wins two years ago. A jersey was ordered for 800, though it didn't arrive in time for when he officially reached the mark Tuesday with a 10-0 win over Treasure Valley Community College in the first game of a doubleheader. Loud cheers from his team and a hug from his daughter Kylie, now a volunteer assistant on the team will do for now.

As will a 4-0 win in Game 2 to extend the Golden Eagles' current win streak to eight games. However, the milestone allows Nick Baumert to reflect. Something he sometimes misses amid the daily grind of building a national power from scratch over 19 seasons.

“When you reach those benchmarks, some of those memories start popping out of kids that have been through and different things like that,” Baumert told the Times-News . “Sometimes when you’re in between the benchmarks you’re just in between the daily grind there’s just some reflection.” College of Southern Idaho softball head coach Nick Baumert talks with freshman Kyli Carrell during the No.

Baumert was Twin Falls softball’s head coach for seven seasons before he took the CSI job. His dad, Scott, was a fixture at home games before his death in 2014. Baumert's mom, Kay, still comes to games when she can.

Baumert's wife, Karen, is the school’s sports information director. Kylie played for her dad in 2019, 2020 and 2022. She was no stranger to the dugout growing up.

“Just been very, very blessed to have a great spot to do it,” Baumert said. Kylie Baumert will coach alongside her father, Nick Baumert, who has served program’s head coach since its inception in the 2007 season. That family atmosphere has passed down to the CSI team.

The players all live together. They spend a lot of time with each other and learn to support one another. Baumert, though he doesn’t speak a lot, knows when to push things in the right direction.

The team motto for a freshman-heavy group is “brick by brick.” It means focus one pitch and one play at a time and don’t look too far ahead. “It’s a good mindset to have,” freshman Kyli Carrell told the Times-News .

“Especially being a first year, you can get really anxious, really excited about the things but you have to really hone in on the little things and lay down your bricks to build that wall.” College of Southern Idaho softball's Kyli Carrell is all smiles rounding the bases during the No. 24 Golden Eagles 10-0 win over Treasure Valley Community College on April 22, 2025.

It was head coach Nick Baumert's 800th career win at CSI. A wall that Baumert has built for 19 years as he encourages players to always give it their all in every single practice and game. Pushing players to make sure they’re actually given their best when their best is needed.

Something he’s tried to do from the day he was brought in to create a program at a school that expects excellence. “Just get up every morning and work as hard as you can until the sun goes down,” Baumert said. “I think that’s one thing that we’ve done as a program.

We’re just kind of that yeoman type effort.” Your story lives in the Magic Valley, and our new mobile app is designed to make sure you don’t miss breaking news, the latest scores, the weather forecast and more.
