SJ Belangel powered Daegu anew as the KOGAS Pegasus beat Suwon KT Sonicboom, 79-75, to force an extension in their quarterfinal showdown in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) Friday, April 18. Belangel provided the spark for the Pegasus in the fourth quarter as he orchestrated a 12-9 blitz halted the Sonicboom’s late-game surge to level their quarters series at 2-2.
The win forged them a do- or-die clash between the two squads this Sunday, April 20, with the victor earning a semifinal meeting against the Seoul SK Knights. A former Gilas Pilipinas and Ateneo standout, Belangel topscored with 19 points, five assists and one steal in 28 minutes of action for his fourth double-digit scoring for Daegu since the start of the quarters last weekend. Andrew Nicholson also led the Pegasus with 19 points, while Kim Nak-Hyeon (18) and Shin Seung-Min (11) chipped in 18 and 11 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, JD Cagulangan got offensively neutralized though he was able to earn some minutes for the Sonicboom. Rayshaun Hammonds had a double-double performance of 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Moon Jeong-Hyeon and Heo Hoon added 15 and 10 points, respectively, but it was not enough to steer Suwon to victory. Meanwhile, Carl Tamayo and the Changwon LG Sakers begin their semis duel against the Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus on Thursday, April 24.
