The man has a message for baby boomers. It is an important message. You see, if there is one group backing Mark Carney and the Liberals it is the baby boomers.
We’re especially talking about those who have seen their homes or other assets skyrocket in value and who supported a system giving them the good life but that’s now crumbling, leaving younger people holding the bag. Younger people are asking a lot of questions about how they managed to end up getting the short end of the stick. Gordon Campbell was the premier of British Columbia and led the province’s Liberal party.
Campbell is also a baby boomer. “What we should really ask ourselves is a simple question. I would hope voters will ask this: Am I better off now than I was 10 years ago?” Ten years ago, when the Liberal party under Justin Trudeau promised sunny ways and delivered stormy days.
“OK, if they are better off, they make their own choice. I think if they look at the facts they will say we can’t carry on with where we are and that’s the story we have to keep pushing to people,” says Campbell. But say you’re living in a place like Toronto where you bought your house decades ago and its value is now through the roof.
Those people are sitting pretty. “That’s the challenge. We have to think of the next generation, not just ourselves.
At some point, and I think this is it, we say to the boomers: What about your grandkids? What about your kids? “They can’t afford what you have. “This cannot be all about what the boomers want. It’s got to be about what our kids and our grandkids need, not just what we would like.

It’s wrong.
” For 10 years, the Liberal government did not stand for Canada, they didn’t even think Canada had a core identity. “They have done a lot to undermine our self-confidence,” says Campbell. “We’re on the wrong path in Canada right now.
We’re on the path to more debt, more taxes, a weaker economy, an economy more dependent on the Americans. After 10 years of that, let’s change it.” Campbell believes there is a stark contrast between Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
“It’s important to stand for what you believe in. Mr. Poilievre believes in what Canadians believe in, a strong, independent Canada that takes full advantage of all its economic opportunities.
“Mr. Carney has actually tried to hide what he really believes in.” That is, more of the same.
Bigger government, higher taxes, no support for resource development, the list goes on. Campbell has put some of his thoughts down on paper. He tells Canadians an election “is no time for magical thinking.
It’s time to get real.” Most of the trouble we face is because of the Liberals, not Trump. Still, the U.
S. president’s trolling has led to a “collective amnesia” where folks forget what Canada endured under the Liberals. “We should resist this form of Trump derangement,” says Campbell.
As for Carney, who still supports the No More Pipelines law, Canada will be left selling discounted oil and gas to Trump’s America. “No wonder Carney is now Trump’s favourite prime minister.” Campbell adds Carney will do whatever he needs to do to win the vote April 28 and then he will do what he wants afterwards.
“He has one priority — to retain power.” Campbell says this election is now “in flux.” “People are starting to remember the Liberal decade.
This is a short campaign on purpose. The Liberals don’t want people to remember. “It’s time to turn our backs on fear, look at the facts and build a future.
” The conversation with Campbell ends where it started. The boomers, the group who could saddle us with four years of Carney and the Liberals. “Start thinking about your whole family and what’s best for them and I think people make the right choices.
