Speeders and other traffic violators in Berkeley County’s residential neighborhoods had a rude awakening earlier this month as the county’s traffic unit ramped up enforcement across several subdivisions. From March 31 through April 4, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit conducted a focused traffic enforcement operation to crack down on unsafe driving behaviors in communities throughout the county. The targeted patrols occurred in neighborhoods including Cane Bay, Nexton, Sangaree, Hunters Bend, Tall Pines, Treeland, College Park Estates, St.
James Estates, Sedgefield and Foster Creek. Officials said the initiative, which was driven by resident complaints and public safety concerns, resulted in 325 citations and 252 warnings for a range of traffic violations. “This operation reflects our continued commitment to making our neighborhoods safer,” said Sheriff Duane Lewis.
“We’ve heard the concerns from the community, and we’re taking action to ensure that drivers are held accountable and that our streets are safe for everyone.” Among the citations were violations for speeding, seatbelt noncompliance, driving without a license, disregarding stop signs, passing stopped school buses, and operating uninsured or unregistered vehicles. Deputies also cited drivers for reckless driving, open container violations and improper child restraints, among others.
In addition to traffic citations, the operation led to 12 criminal cases. These included four charges of possession of a controlled substance, two fugitive from justice cases, and single cases of trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, and felon in possession of a firearm. One suspect was charged with possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and another was arrested for being a habitual traffic offender.
Six vehicles were towed during the operation. A press release from the sheriff’s office noted that such traffic initiatives are conducted randomly and aim to deter reckless driving while responding to resident concerns. “These efforts help deter reckless driving and respond to community concerns in high-traffic and residential areas,” according to a press release.
