An oatcake shop that’s run by a couple who visited since they were children has celebrated its first birthday. Adam ‘Cap’ and Clare Capper, of Mellors Oatcakes and More in the Cambridge Drive precinct, Newcastle-under-Lyme, described taking on the shop as ‘the best thing they’ve ever done’ when getting the keys last year. Phil Plant, one of the former owners, initially helped the Clayton couple to learn the ropes and get to grips with making the oatcakes to the family recipe.
Cap had formerly worked as a landscaper before taking on the oatcake shop, and Clare had worked in the neighbouring Post Office - meaning many people already knew their face which boosted the shop’s popularity. To celebrate the business’ first anniversary, Cap and Clare invited Shaun the Busker to entertain customers, as well as putting on a display of balloons. Some customers were lucky enough to enjoy free oatcakes and cakes during the day (April 10).
Cap said: “Twelve months have flown by. Our favourite moments are having banter with the customers. “We’ve stopped doing the desserts [which the couple decided to begin selling in October last year] because it wasn't working.
We faced some hard times in January [because business was slow with less people coming in]. “Other than that, nothing’s really changed. We’re still selling oatcakes and pikelets, and we’re now offering a delivery service from Mondays to Thursdays.
We’d like to say ‘thank you’ to our customers for their custom and support.” Mellors Oatcakes and More is open from 7.30am until 1pm from Mondays to Saturdays.
