Residents living nearby Bolton Council ’s refuse depot at Wellington Yard were kicking up a stink about the smells emanating from the plant when this photo was taken in 1949. Wellington Yard, Bolton, 1949 (Picture: Newsquest) Bolton’s refuse wagons would return to the depot on Wellington Street where their loads would be processed. But a solution was close at hand for the council had announced that the plant would be removed to a new site near Raikes Lane.
It looks as though refuse was sorted in the large shed and perhaps some form of recycling may have been taking place..
