UL pitcher Tate Hess (23) started the game and catcher Jose Torres (47) delivered a three-run double during the Cajuns' midweek win over Nicholls on Wednesday. UL coach Matt Deggs vowed to use the same lineup that produced 10 runs in Saturday’s road win over Old Dominion in the next game.
Thanks to catcher Jose Torres delivering in the clutch once again, it produced another victory with a 6-2 decision over the Nicholls Colonels on Wednesday at Russo Park. "Cheo (Torres) was good, (Conor) Higgs banged the ball all over the ball park," Deggs said. "We hit a lot of balls hard tonight.
We had a lot of hard contact with nothing to show for it." The Cajuns improved to 19-23 with the win, while Nicholls dropped to 15-26. UL will next open a three-game home Sun Belt series against Georgia Southern at 6 p.
m. Friday. With the game tied at 2-all in the bottom of the sixth, Torres sent a three-run double to rightcenter to give the Cajuns the lead for good.
"It's a day to day thing," Torres said. "I just try to do less. It's already hard to hit so do whatever it takes to help the team win, especially in that situation where everybody thinks there's so much going on.
I just try to slow down everything. All you can do it hit the ball hard." Torres finished the game 3-of-4 at the plate at the bottom with three RBIs.
"It was a little away and on top of the zone - fastball," he said. "I don't mind hitting ninth. Being on the field is all what I need.
" Caleb Stelly singled, Lee Amedee was hit by a pitch and Carson Hepworth walked to load the bases. UL’s first run in the game was a leadoff homer to right in the second by Higgs. After the Colonels tied it in the third on a Logan Mock RBI single and then took the lead in the fifth on a Jaden Collura run-scoring double, the Cajuns tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth when Owen Galt singled and later scored on a Maddox Mandino ground out.
Higgs followed singles from Drew Markle and Luke Yuhasz with a long sacrifice fly to center for an insurance run in the seventh. Because of the rainout, UL starter Tate Hess only lasted 2.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits.
Riley Marcotte went the next two innings – also giving up a run on two hits and three walks. Sam Ardoin made his season debut on the mound to get an out to finish off the fifth inning. "I thought Sammy looked the part," Deggs said.
"I thought he did a great job. I wanted to get his feet wet. It wasn't exactly idea .
.. if we make a play at third, boom, boom and he's out of it.
But he's able to jam a kid at third there." Getting the win was senior reliever Dylan Theut with four shutout innings. "I came out of the pen just knowing I had the first inning," Theut said.
"From there, you kind of go one batter at a time. You don't really ask questions about how many more I've got. You hope they keep me out there as long as they can.
" The left-hander allowed one hit, one walk and struck out four in 59 pitches. "I'm definitely back and ready to go for this weekend," Theut said. It was Theut's first win since April 28, 2023 against Coastal Carolina.
He missed the entire 2024 season with an arm injury and then missed time earlier this season after ankle surgery. "It's very special," Theut said. "By the grace of God alone was I able to do that.
It was a long road - a lot of therapy and a lot of time with Mr. B (Bria Davis). There's just a lot of doubt that just comes with surgery.
It's great to be back there. "I'm just blessed to be able to be out there again right now." .
