PETALING JAYA: National shuttlers Leong Jun Hao and Pearly Tan are honoured to play the role of captains in the Malaysian squad for the first time at the Sudirman Cup. For Jun Hao, the appointment comes with added weight. Not only is he making his debut at the prestigious mixed team event, he will also be stepping into the shoes of top men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia, who is currently recovering from an injury.
"It’s a big responsibility being team captain this time. I have to lead by example and give my best,” said Jun Hao in an interview with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). "I also hope everyone in the team will give their full cooperation.
We’re here as one team, and we will win as one team." Sharing his sentiments is co-captain Pearly, who is set to guide the younger players in the squad, including debutants Carmen Ting who will be pairing with Go Pei Kee in the women's double. "This team is a mix of seniors and juniors.
As captain, there’s still much I can learn from others," said Pearly. "For the younger ones, I’ll be there to support them and share my experience so they don’t feel too nervous. I’ve been in their shoes before, so I understand how they feel.
If I can help in any way, I’ll do my best to support them.” The national team has begun settling into the tournament venue at the Fenghuang Gymnasium in Xiamen, with preparations going smoothly. Malaysia will open their Group C campaign against France on Monday, followed by matches against Australia on Tuesday and Japan on Thursday.
