Singer Carrie Underwood revealed she feared getting hate after a certain throwback moment on American Idol . Underwood, who won the hit ABC singing competition in 2005, made her judging debut during Season 23's premiere in early March after she replaced Katy Perry and has already racked up enough hate from certain fans. However, while the 42-year-old judge was still a contestant, all she cared about was disappointing the judges as she progressed in the competition and was doubtful of achieving that when she chose to sing Heart's hit Alone during her Top 11 performance.
Antiques Roadshow expert can't believe guest hid valuable box of jewelry from parents JK Rowling branded 'heinous loser' by Pedro Pascal after Supreme Court gender ruling Speaking on American Idol's new podcast, From Idol to Icon, Underwood revealed that she was nervous about singing the song and was sure that the judges and audience were going to "hate" her version. The singer said before playing the clip of her performance: "You might remember the high note, but you definitely remember the mile-high hair. How do I get you, pun intended, to re-watch my top 11 alone performance with me? And trust me, I will press pause and serve the tea.
" "The theme for this week, where I sang Alone, was number ones. So it's kind of like you have your rules. Every week we'd get our new theme, and we'd get to work on what songs we wanted to sing.
" Underwood had made it to the Top 12 and went to buy a laptop so she could "do some homework." She explained, "We got our list of years, what the number one songs were. And I remember I always loved this song.
I've always loved Heart. I feel like it was one that was kind of in my back pocket from the beginning, even before I knew what the themes were going to be. "I feel like each week, you're always second-guessing.
You've always got a couple of options. Once you get in and start working with the band, you might be like, 'Oh, you know, maybe I don't sound as good on that one as I thought I did.' And so you switch.
But yeah, I'd say it was the right choice." Pausing the clip, Underwood said song choice is "so difficult" when you're "doing something like this because just as much as people are listening to you sing it, their thinking about the original song." "I think I even remember, like, writing in my journal how much they were not gonna like me singing this song and being not so much worried. I was like, 'They're gonna hate it. Whatever.
I really wanna do it, so let's go.' You never know what's gonna happen," she recalled. Underwood's hair for the performance was just as iconic as her singing, as it was teased up high.
"That was some big hair," she commented, acknowledging that, of course, the stylists were drawing inspiration from the fashions contemporary to this 1987 hit. "But I was kind of self-conscious of it in the moment," Underwood continued. "It was a little not how I was used to seeing myself.
" "Of course now, it's iconic. Wouldn't change a thing. But at the time I was nervous," she added.
"I hadn't fully embraced the fact that I was playing a character, getting into a role. Now I'll do that at the drop of a hat. " After Underwood finished her performance, she was nervous for a whole different reason: Simon Cowell made a bold prediction about her career that she thought might make her unpopular with the rest of the contestants.
"I will make a prediction," Cowell told her as he reacted to her performance. "Not only will you win this show, you will sell more records than any other previous Idol winner." "What an incredible prediction," Underwood said, looking back at her nervousness and then getting lovely comments.
"On one hand, I think at the time I thought this was amazing. And then five seconds later I thought, 'I have a target on my back now. Everybody's gonna hate me.
'" Cowell's prediction was correct. Underwood did win her season of Idol and has gone on to sell more than 85 million records worldwide to date, beating Kelly Clarkson, who is the second-best-selling Idol winner at 82 million records sold. "The compliment outweighed the fear," she said, "because that was just incredible.
I know I slept well that night.".
