Dorset Scrapstore, which has been operating for nine years in Alder Hills, Poole, has been told by Bournemouth Church Housing Association (BCHA) to move out of its current location by mid-June. BCHA now requires the space for its own activities and has offered Dorset Scrapstore a smaller area in the same building, but the charity said this would not be a "best fit". This has prompted the charity to start searching for a new location immediately.
The charity's chair of trustees, Carolyn Corr, said: "The creative hub known as Dorset Scrapstore is all about people; members, local business donors, volunteers and staff are all part of our wonderful supportive community. "When one door closes, another one opens. "I see this as an opportunity to move on to a bigger and better space.
" The charity is looking for premises that are at least 1,600 square feet, with parking on site, that are located close to Poole or Bournemouth and are on a bus route. This space will need to accommodate volunteers sorting donations, workshops and a craft table. The charity is also looking for help from people with certain skills who could help them with their move.
They need a solicitor to help set up the lease, and people who could help with removals, plumbing, electrical work and general handyman tasks. They also need a gas safe certified engineer and someone who could help with signage and flags for their new premises and van. Dorset Scrapstore is a not-for-profit charity that has been operating for 25 years.
It takes donations of waste materials from businesses and individuals to divert them from landfill. These items are made available in the Dorset Scrapstore shop as art, craft and DIY supplies, providing a low-cost community resource. The charity has more than 1,500 members and serves around 4,000 people, including schools, nurseries, care homes, students, artists and other charities.
It also runs creative workshops and provides community craft activities at events such as the Arts by the Sea Festival..
