People have discovered a nifty way to check if their freezer is functioning optimally. This straightforward test can reveal whether your food might be spoiled and prevent you from falling ill. The freezer takes on an increasingly important role in our homes, storing our leftover meals and batch-cooked dishes.
However, it's crucial to confirm that the appliance is working properly, as any fault could pose a health risk. To ascertain whether your freezer has maintained its cool during your absence, one trick involves just a coin and a cup of water. This is particularly useful after being away for some time.
This simple experiment can alert you to any periods when your freezer may have thawed out, sparing you from unknowingly consuming spoilt food that may be dangerous. - Take a glass and fill it halfway with water, then place it in your freezer - Once the water turns to ice, float a coin on top of the frozen layer - Return it to the freezer, shut the door, and rest easy knowing you'll spot any issues Kate Hall, an expert on freezers, has shed light on how the test works and what steps to take if it indicates your freezer isn't running as it should. She previously told the Express: "A good free test to check that your freezer is working is to put a small half-filled pot of water inside it.
"Let it freeze, then place a coin on top of the ice. If your freezer is working properly the coin should remain on the surface. If it sinks into the ice, then you know your freezer isn't working effectively.
" She added: "If you do find that the temperature is too low, or the ice is melting, the first thing to do is grab a copy of the user manual." "If you don't have a paper copy, you can usually find it online by searching for the model number (which should be on a sticker inside the appliance) and 'user manual' "This should contain troubleshooting advice, which commonly will include checking the seal around the door, and ensuring that the coils at the back of the freezer are clean and free of debris (always switch the freezer off before cleaning)." For those concerned about the state of their frozen goods, there are other checks to conduct, such as examining it the ice crystals or feeling if items remain cold to the touch.
