More native trackpad gestures. The problem with laptops is their keyboards are often the weakest thing about them. The average laptop keyboard and be small and uncomfortable to type on.

If you want to use an external monitor with your laptop, things soon get messy if you add an extra keyboard because you find yourself having to stretch over the keyboard and use the laptop’s trackpad. However, there is another way. You can use a full-size external keyboard with your laptop and still be able to use trackpad gestures if you buy the Clevetura CLVX 1 keyboard.

This clever keyboard is a combination of a low-profile keyboard and a native macOS trackpad. The CLVX 1 is designed by Clevetura , a hi-tech design studio based in Limassol, Cyprus. Founded by some very clever people, Clevetura’s engineers have developed something called TouchOnKeys technology.

This enables a trackpad to be embedded into the surface of a keyboard. The company is headed up by CEO Mike Krupenkov and has offices in the U.S.

and China. It’s been honing TouchOnKeys since 2017 and has constantly evolved and enhanced the concept. The new CLVX1 from Clevetura is a keyboard with a trackpad sensor embedded under the centre keys so .

.. More users can move seamlessly from typing to tracking.

Originally developed for Windows and Linux systems, Clevetura has now turned its attention to developing a full-sized TouchOnKeys keyboard for macOS. The keyboard has a 186 x 84mm trackpad area under the keys so Apple Mac users can still use a trackpad that leverages TouchOnKeys technology for unlocking faster coding workflows, quicker video editing and more efficient work thanks to a combination of trackpad gestures and special keystrokes. The Clevetura CLVX 1 for macOS has recently launched on Kickstarter and, so far, the campaign has raised 1,723% of the original funding goal, thanks to the backing of 423 enthusiastic supporters.

The CLVX 1 keyboard looks and feels as if it were designed and made by Apple. It has a full-sized ANSI layout featuring 110 keys and a scissor mechanism. The center of the keyboard has the embedded, gesture-sensitive trackpad that turns the surface of the CLVX 1 into a native macOS trackpad, just as you’d find on any Apple MacBook.

The Clevetura CLVX1 can connect via Bluetooth or USB and every key has an RGB backlight with ...

More shine-thru legends. Developing the kernel extension that enables a third-party trackpad to work seamlessly with macOS was something of a challenge for Clevetura’s coding team. Currently, the team is putting the final touches to a macOS TouchOnKeys app that will enable the CLVX1 to be fully customized with gestures, extras and keyboard backlight controls.

The build quality of the CLVX 1 feels like Apple’s Magic keyboard, but the keys are totally flat and smooth to ensure the keyboard surface is smooth enough to function as a trackpad. The smooth and flat keys can present an initial challenge when typing, especially if you are used to typing on a keyboard with scooped keycaps, but the convenience of being able to instantly switch from typing to making trackpad gestures is worth the time it takes to adjust to the new typing style. All the keys on the CLVX 1 keyboard have an RGB backlight and each one has shine-thru legends that are a help when typing in low-light settings, such as a video editing suite.

The CLVX 1 also has a full row of function and multimedia keys giving access to the controls built into macOS. In addition, there is a numeric keypad for use with spreadsheets and special keys for turning off the trackpad and for adjusting the tracking response. The trackpad embedded in the Clevetura Clevetura CLVX1 can easily be disabled if necessary.

The CLVX 1 keyboard connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and can pair with up to three host devices with easy switching between them. The keyboard can switch easily between Windows, Linux and macOS layouts, enabling users to work seamlessly across multiple platforms and devices. There is also a USB-C port on the keyboard for a wired connection and for charging the CLVX 1’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

With its embedded trackpad, the CLVX 1 offers both typing and swiping, with adjustments for altering backlight brightness and volume levels. There are left and right mouse buttons below the space bar which provides easy access to contextual menus in macOS with a quick thumb press. The trackpad surface fully supports native macOS gestures like pinch, zoom and swipe thanks to the TouchOnKeys driver software.

For anyone who finds laptop keyboards restrictive, the Clevetura CLVX 1 offers an exciting alternative because it has a larger keyboard layout and a built-in trackpad which means the user can close their laptop’s lid and connect an external display for working in the office or at home. The Clevetura CLVX 1 is available from 24 April 2025 from clevetura.com and is priced at $249 (plus shipping).
