A WEEKLY coffee morning has been set up to help tackle loneliness among military veterans. The sessions give veterans the chance to recall old times and discuss their problems in a welcoming environment. Veterans charity Stepway is behind the coffee mornings, which take place every Thursday at 10am at the Link Nursery Community Hub in Hospital Lane, Powick.

Falklands veteran and district councillor Martin Allen attended the coffee morning so he could see and hear for himself how veterans like him are doing. Cllr Allen said: “Over the last six years I have done all I can to support our much-forgotten veterans. “Now with this fantastic move by Stepway into Powick, I hope that our veterans will use the free buses to come to the centre to meet and support each other. “The coffee mornings are a vital way for veterans to not feel lonely and isolated. “When someone leaves the forces, the world can quickly become a lonely place.

It’s vital we continue to give Stepway the support and assistance it needs. “We owe so much to our veterans; they step forward when others step back.” Stepway, led by chief executive Dawn Turner, aims to support all veterans in civilian life, no matter their background or circumstances.

As well as the veterans coffee morning, there is also a farm shop and community cafe open to the public being run from the community hub. There are also a wellbeing club, art club and craft club. More information about Stepway can be found on their website www.
