Staff report and SAC Sports InformationSALISBURY — Catawba’s softball team tied for seventh in the league standings and was left out of the eight-team South Atlantic Conference Tournament after tiebreakers, but the Indians got the biggest award announced by the league on Thursday.That’s how good Brianna Gallagher’s season was. She’s the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year.
Gallagher, a junior who played high school ball at Southern Alamance, won the SAC batting title with a .480 average and hit .512 in SAC play.
She’s also a Gold Glove right fielder who can play in the infield. She was first team All-SAC as a utility player.Gallagher had 16 homers, setting the Catawba single-season home run, and had 14 doubles.
She had 43 RBIs and 49 runs scored. She led the SAC in home runs and total bases, while ranking in the top five in hits, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.Lincoln Memorial’s Halle Grace Patton was voted SAC Pitcher of the Year.
Lenoir-Rhyne’s Avery Kiger earned SAC Freshman of the Year honors, while Wingate’s Jamie Stanclift received SAC Coach of the Year honors.Catawba first baseman Kary Hales (Carson) was named first team All-SAC. Maddy Altiers made the third team as a DP.
