Could the Washington Commanders come away from the first round of the 2025 NFL draft with one of the top players despite picking No. 29 overall?NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah has submitted his final mock draft, and Texas All-American cornerback Jahdae Barron falls to the Commanders. This is a case of a team staying put and watching a value pick fall to it.
I have Barron much higher in my rankings. He and 2024 second-round pick Mike Sainristil are two guys Washington could move all over the field. If Barron fell to Washington, general manager Adam Peters would have no hesitation in submitting the pick.
Some believe Barron is a top-10 prospect in this draft. Not only is Barron an elite athlete, he offers physicality, versatility and experience at the next level. The Commanders could play Barron at cornerback, nickel, or safety, and he'd excel wherever he lined up.
Here is NFL.com's Lance Zierlein's scouting report on Barron:Big nickelback was in the right place at the right time throughout his impressive 2024 season. Barron played smothering coverage underneath, fueled by route recognition, footwork and play strength.
His instincts allow him to pounce on catch points or tackle pass catchers immediately from zone. However, he lacks recovery speed deep and can be a little too grabby at the top of the route in man. Tackle technique in run support is a shade inconsistent but looks easily correctable.
The size and tape work in his favor as a physical nickel who can be an early contributor and future starter, with the potential to cross-train as a safety. It would be shocking to see Barron fall to Washington. However, as we've learned over the years, never say never during the first round of the NFL draft.
