Peshawar - A meeting of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cabinet Committee on Legislation was held at the Civil Secretariat Peshawar under the chairmanship of the Provincial Minister for Law, Advocate Aftab Alam. The meeting focused on reviewing significant legal and administrative reforms aimed at strengthening the justice system and enhancing public welfare initiatives. It was attended by Secretary of Law and Parliamentary Affairs Akhtar Saeed, Secretary Board of Revenue Muhammad Irshad, Director of Prosecution (Home Department) Mian Aziz Ahmad, Deputy Secretary Judicial (Home Department) Fazal Qayum, along with officials from other relevant departments.
During the meeting, deliberations were held on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Legal Aid (Amendment) Act 2025. The proposed amendments aim to improve access to legal assistance for underprivileged and marginalized segments of society. These reforms seek to simplify processes and enhance the effectiveness of the legal aid system.
The committee also discussed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Criminal Prosecution Service (Constitution, Functions, and Powers) (Amendment) Act 2025. The objective of these amendments is to strengthen the institutional capacity of the prosecution service, promote transparency and autonomy, and ensure the timely resolution of cases. KP CM discusses proposed projects for inclusion in ADP In addition, the committee reviewed a legal opinion presented by the Higher Education Department (HED) regarding promotion and seniority issues faced by lecturers recruited in the merged districts in 2011.
Proposals were put forward to resolve these legal complexities in a balanced and fair manner. Advocate Aftab Alam appreciated the hard work of the concerned departments and emphasized the need for the timely finalization of the proposed legal drafts for approval by the provincial cabinet, followed by their presentation in the provincial assembly. On the occasion, the minister ssaid that these reforms reflect the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s commitment to legal stability, improved governance, and the protection of cultural values—all aimed at ensuring the welfare of the people.
